Your mother was right, breakfast is important
Do you often skip breakfast? Or do you find yourself quite moody and lethargic during the work day? By simply making the decision to have breakfast as your first meal of the day it can really make the start of your day a healthy one.
Read on to learn more about why you shouldn't skip breakfast. It’s definitely an eye opener!
Breakfast Is A Good Nutritious Start To Your Day
Eating breakfast in the morning is vital to fueling the body and the brain. While you sleep overnight, you are basically fasting, which is where the name originates. Break and fast, makes sense now doesn’t it?
If you don’t have breakfast you’re forcing your body to run on an empty fuel tank and that isn’t healthy.
According to nutritionists you should consume breakfast within two hours of waking up and try to eat foods that are sources of important nutrients including:
- Calcium
- Iron
- Vitamin B
- Protein
- Fibre
Tip: The easiest way to get the most nutrients at the start of the day is to incorporate a serving of fruit or vegetables in you meal. You can easily have a banana with your breakfast or a glass of freshly squeezed juice that contains both fruit and vegetables
Breakfast Helps With Reducing Anxiety

Food has already been proven to help with your mood and productivity. Furthermore, there’s no doubt that the way you start your day will affect the rest of your day too. Skipping breakfast will only set you up to fail with your mood and productivity.
If you skip breakfast your body will react in a negative way. Your ability to manage stress will decrease if you don’t have a proper meal in the morning. When you stress, your body will produce stress hormones and they take away vital nutrients such as calcium, zinc and iron which are all vital in helping you cope with stress.
Breakfast Helps Reduce The Risk Of Various Diseases

A study was conducted to see if skipping breakfast would increase the risk of developing atherosclerosis. It focused on atherosclerosis, a cardiovascular disease where plaque builds up in the arteries which causes them to harden and narrow. The study found that the group of people that skipped breakfast had the most risk of developing the disease than the group that didn’t skip breakfast.
It’s important to understand that skipping breakfast is not always a direct cause of various diseases. But rather the breakfast skippers usually have less healthy habits which heighten your risk of diseases.
It’s important to adopt healthy habits and the first step is definitely starting your day right with a nutritious breakfast.
Breakfast Improves Your Mood

As we've discussed above, food definitely affects your mood. By simply making sure you have breakfast in the morning you can improve your mood easily. Food directly impacts your emotions, behaviour and your mood through the nutrients you consume.
For example, if you have an iron-rich breakfast this can help prevent fatigue, inattentiveness and depression. Or perhaps later in the day if you decide to have a snack, a block of dark chocolate which contains phenylethylamine encourages your brain to release endorphins which make you feel happier.
We’re definitely not saying you need to have dark chocolate for breakfast but knowing what you put in your body at any given time of the day affects your overall wellbeing & mood. So definitely starting the day off right with breakfast can kick things off.
